The Readiness Myth: Why Waiting Until You Feel Prepared Is Holding You Back

Let’s be honest—have you ever caught yourself putting off your business dreams because you didn’t feel ready? If so, you’re definitely not the only one. I see this all the time with women who want to start a business, but feel like they need to check every box first before they take that first step.

And here’s the truth: the idea that you need to feel 100% ready before you start? It’s a myth. A big one. I call it the readiness myth—and it’s probably the biggest thing standing between you and the fulfilling, passion-driven business you’ve been dreaming about.

Here’s the uncomfortable (but freeing!) truth: you’re never going to feel fully ready to start your business, your podcast, or any meaningful new venture. And that’s okay. That’s normal.

After working with hundreds of new business owners, I’ve noticed this mindset shows up in three big ways:

1. “I need to know everything first.”

So many women believe they need to master all the things—accounting, marketing, operations, tech—before they can start. But guess what? You don’t have to be an expert in everything to begin. You learn by doing. The best way to gain business knowledge is to actually get in the game. Yes, you need a little foundation, but real growth happens after you start—not before.

2. “My offer isn’t perfect yet.”

This one’s huge. We picture the perfect version of what we want to create and then feel stuck because we’re not there yet. But you don’t need a flawless product, program, or service to launch. You just need something good enough to help someone. And when you get out there and serve? You’ll naturally improve. Feedback, experience, and momentum will help you evolve.

3. “I need a guarantee it will work.”

We all want to know we’re not wasting time, money, or energy. But business doesn’t come with guarantees. There’s always some risk and uncertainty. What separates successful entrepreneurs isn’t certainty—it’s the willingness to take action before they have all the answers. Confidence and clarity come after you begin—not before.

Now, one quick caveat: the only real “readiness” that matters is whether you have time to invest. If your plate is completely full and adding anything would hurt your health, family, or sanity—then it might not be the right season yet. But if you can carve out even a few focused hours a week? You’re ready enough to begin.

So if you’ve been waiting to feel perfectly prepared before you launch your business… consider this your nudge (or maybe your permission slip) to go for it. Start where you are, with what you have. Let your offer be imperfect. Embrace the unknown.

Because the skills, confidence, and success you’re hoping for? They don’t show up before you start—they’re built as you go.

You don’t need to be fully ready. You just need to get moving.
