Think Twice Before Starting a Business Based on Your Passion
We’ve all heard it—“Turn your passion into a business!” And on the surface, that sounds amazing, right? Who wouldn’t want to wake up every day excited about what they’re doing?
But after coaching hundreds of women who are just getting started, I’ve seen firsthand that starting a business based purely on passion can actually set you up for frustration—or even failure.
Here’s the truth no one talks about: Passion isn’t enough.
Yes, it matters. But it’s not the foundation of a profitable business. Enthusiasm can motivate you to get started, but it won’t automatically bring in sales, attract the right audience, or sustain you when things get hard (because they will get hard).
Let’s be real:
👉 Hobbies cost money.
👉 Businesses make money.
And if you’re starting a business, the goal is to make money doing something meaningful—not to create an expensive hobby.
My 1st Business Started Out of A Gap in the Market + Something I Personally Loved
When I first started out, I was selling home accessories. Then I moved into baby items. Then personalized gifts. Then collegiate stuff. My business shifted a lot—but what kept me going (and growing) wasn’t a single passion. It was the bigger picture: I loved boutique retail, I enjoyed connecting with customers, and I knew how to spot what people actually wanted to buy.
Had I clung to just one product or one phase of life, I probably would’ve burned out or gone broke. Instead, I stayed open, followed what worked, and built skills around it.
That’s the shift I want you to consider.
Ask Yourself These 3 Questions Before You Build a Business Around Your Passion
1. Is this passion something you’ll still care about in five years?
So many women come to me fired up about something they love right now—but when life shifts or it starts to feel like “work,” the love fades. Starting a business takes time, effort, and consistency. If you’re not willing to show up for it even when you’re not feeling it, it’s going to be a tough road.
2. Are you actually good at it?
This one can sting, I know—but enjoying something and being good enough to sell it are two different things. You might love to bake, paint, or work out—but that doesn’t automatically mean people will pay you for it. Your skills matter. Can you deliver real results? Do people already come to you for this? That’s a sign you’re onto something.
3. Are you being blinded by your excitement?
When you’re in love with an idea, it’s easy to ignore whether there’s a real market for it. You might spend money on branding, websites, or equipment before you even know if anyone wants what you’re selling. That’s why it’s so important to validate your idea. Don’t just build what you want—make sure it’s something your audience wants too.
Passion + Skill + Strategy = Sustainable Success
The most successful business owners I know aren’t just “following their passion.” They’re building businesses around what they’re good at—what they can actually help people with—and they’ve created offers that are desirable and needed.
I love fitness and healthy eating. I’m passionate about both. But I knew that building a business in that space would burn me out. That self-awareness saved me from chasing the wrong thing and helped me focus on what I am great at—helping women confidently market and grow their business.

Bottom Line: Passion Is a Clue, Not a Business Plan
If you’re starting a business, don’t stop at “What am I passionate about?”
Ask:
✔ What am I actually skilled at?
✔ What do people need and want?
✔ How can I serve them in a way that’s sustainable for me?
Because when your business combines what you enjoy and what you’re great at—while meeting real needs—that’s when you stop spinning your wheels and start growing.
