7 Smart Things to Spend Money on When You're Starting a Business

Starting a business comes with a lot of decisions—especially when it comes to money. Where should you invest? What can wait? And how do you make the most of your limited resources without wasting a ton of time (or cash)?

After more than 20 years of running businesses, I’ve seen what works—and what doesn’t. So let’s talk about seven things that are actually worth spending money on when you’re launching.

1. Personal Help (Yes, Really)

This one surprises people, but it might be the most important: create space in your life.
If you’re working a full-time job, raising kids, or juggling all the things (or all of the above!), your time and brainpower are precious.
That means it might be worth spending on help—grocery delivery, meal kits, a part-time sitter, someone to mow the yard. Even a few hours freed up each week can give you the space you need to actually focus and move forward. It’s not indulgent—it’s smart.

2. Basic Legal + Bookkeeping Setup

No need to rush out and form an LLC on day one—unless your business involves liability or you’re already making around $30k/year. But you do want to get your ducks in a row with a simple business name (DBA), a federal EIN, and a way to track income and expenses.
Tools like QuickBooks Self-Employed are easy to use and can save you major stress come tax time.

3. Your Domain Name/Website Platform

Secure it early—even if you're not ready to build your website yet. Domains are inexpensive and getting your business name locked down is a smart move.

4. A Simple Logo & Website Design

You don’t need to spend thousands to get started. Platforms like Squarespace, Wix, or Shopify offer beautiful, functional templates that you can build yourself (or with help from a low-cost designer).
Skip the fancy branding for now—your message and your offers matter more than a perfect logo.

5. Tools or Equipment That Help You Deliver

Depending on your business, this might mean product prototypes, packaging supplies, a good microphone, or simply a reliable computer that doesn’t drive you crazy.
Don’t overspend—but don’t settle for tech or tools that slow you down and hurt your credibility either.

6. Only the Training or Certifications You Truly Need

Before you sign up for another course or pay for a certification, ask yourself:
Will this directly help me serve my clients or get paid?
So many business owners get stuck in over-preparing. If you already have the skills—go ahead and start.

7. Support From Someone Who’s Been There

This one’s a game-changer. Whether it’s one hour with a coach or a few sessions with a strategist, getting outside guidance from someone who understands business can save you months of frustration.
Clarity and direction are priceless when you're starting out—and a little investment here often has the biggest return.

Every business is different, so not all of these will apply in the same way. But if you focus your money (and energy) on what actually moves you forward, you’ll build momentum faster—and with way less stress.
