Ep 188: Loneliness & how to cope as you start & build your business
May 25, 2023
In today’s episode I talk about the “L” word - yes, loneliness. So many new business owners tell me they sometimes feel alone as they get their business started & growing. Yes, it does happen to many, but the good news is there are some things you can put in place to cope.
Even I have felt lonely in my business. When I started my online business in 2003, no one I knew AT ALL was online. I literally knew no one doing this. I had no coach. I had no coaching group. I wasn’t a part of anything. I literally just figured it all out on my own - and made decisions on my own - and made mistakes on my own.
I can’t help but think that some of the mistakes I made could have been prevented - and I could have had even a more fulfilling journey with those online boutiques had I been more a part of groups & had surrounded myself with like-minded people going through the same things.
Today I share with you the 3 things you can do to cope with loneliness.
I talk about:
1 - how you need to accept the fact that yes, it can get lonely. It will happen at some point. And it’s what you do about it that matters. But do accept that you are on a unique journey & your business is unique & you are unique & your circumstances are unique. And yes, being unique sometimes isolates you - but it doesn’t mean you ACTUALLY have to be lonely.
2 - get plugged in. Somehow, some way. It could be through your chamber of commerce, business groups in your area, FB groups (like my free Women Starting Businesses FB Group), and even group coaching programs like the Just Getting Started Group or Grow-Getters. These can be INVALUABLE to your journey & give you such great insights into how others do things, best practices & more!
3 - hire help. That definitely help alleviate the loneliness - plus give you someone else’s eyeballs on your business to help give you advice. PLUS it will free up your time so you can focus on what’s important in your business.
4 - change the way you are doing/running things.Another example, if you have an online boutique & really miss seeing people/customers in person, consider doing local vendor shows, farmer’s markets, events, renting out space in a store - or even opening your own store. Don’t be afraid to change things up - even by hiring people to work with you, so you don’t feel lonely.
Know that it is totally normal if you do feel lonely at times, but I hope you’ll listen today to hear more stories & make you see that you do not need to go about this alone!
